The federal government is taking a sharper look at Medicare spending, and a Murfreesboro company is trying to make sure that health care providers are ready.

ClaimTrust today announced that it has creates a “Recovery Audit Contractor Resource Center” — which provides tips and resources to help prepare companies to have their books audited by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid. The company, which employs about 50 people, is trying to get ahead of the curve as the government ratchets up audits in an effort to reclaim overpayments that can be three years old.

A demonstration phase of the RAC program was created by the Medicare Modernization Act of 2003, and ran from 2005 through 2008 in California, Florida and New York, South Carolina and Massachusetts. The program recaptured about $950 million. A 2006 law, the Tax Relief and Health Care Act of 2006, made the RAC program permanent and expanded it to all 50 states. The rollout is this year.
